Good product, but...

A Little About Myself
Like working on home improvement projects.
Pros
Relatively small footprint.
Cons
The access to batteries seems difficult. Batteries need to be replaced periodically but the housing holding them does not seem to make this task easy.
Service & Delivery
Satisfactory, no problems.

I purchased this product for myself. I am partially disabled by a progressing illness, and I have a difficulty using stairs. I selected this particular model because it appears to have relatively small footprint of the tracks, which is an important issue for me since my stairs are only 36" wide. I decided to install the lift myself because the video showed it to be a relatively simple task and I have experience working on home improvement projects. However, what the video does not show is the weight of the components. Due to this factor, the installation is a two-person job and requires considerable physical strength. The instructions that came with the product are clear and easy to follow. Despite that, I encountered several difficulties during the installation: 1. It is not easy to properly position the assembled rail on the stairs. The assembly begins from the bottom of the stairs where the motor assembly weighing 100 lbs is placed, but there is little guidance how far the end of the rail should be positioned from the lowest step. I discovered that I placed the unit too far, and as a result the top end of the rail fell short of the required 10" from the top step. Repositioning the assembled lift was difficult because it required vertical readjustments to maintain the 70mm clearance between the rail and the edge of the steps. I feel that installation instruction should contain better guidance on this initial step. 2. The preinstalled plastic casing for bus lines slides out during installation and can be easily damaged. I found it helpful to remove it and reinsert it after assembling the lift. However I accidentally pushed out the preinstalled bus lines in the motor assembly that hold charging pins in place. This pushes the pins to the rail and makes reinserting casing very difficult. I solved the problem by pulling about 1" of bus line out of the casing, bending it downwards to form a letter "S" (see photo 1), filing off the edge of the lower part of "S" and pushing it back to the rail, so the the S-shaped bus line "scooped" and lifted the pin, allowing the casing to slide back in. I think the instruction could be more explicit about this potential problem, and offer solutions if the casing is accidentally pulled out. 3. Fastening the stop limit cams is a bit of a challenge because the tightening screw is hard to rotate and the access is difficult. Another potential problem that I discovered is that the removal and change of batteries can be a challenge. These batteries are on both ends of the plastic housing of the motor unit. Although the housing has an opening on the top covered with a lid held by two screws, the length of that opening appears too short, as a result of which the batteries are partially covered (see photo 2)and impossible to remove without disassembling the entire housing. In general, I am satisfied with the unit, it seems to be working well. However, it still takes a lot of space, at least to my taste, even though it has one of the smallest footprints among the available products.

One remote was determined non functional, call to service resulted in another remote being sent out. Thought it odd to pay return shipping on bad remote but not a big deal!
Followed instructions, went together well. Performs excellent.

A Little About Myself
Pros
If you are even somewhat handy this product is very easy to install! It took me probably 6 hours in all but with two people it would have been less. Parts are heavy so should have 2 people while doing this. Very quiet unit, so would not disturb anyone else in the house. Moves smoothly and is quite a nice ride. True to word, the product looks like it is new.
Cons
Installing the bus line on the side. The wires that are from the seat to motor should be a little different as the other day I pulled the seat off and forgot about the wires and then the unit wouldnt work. After getting a helpful friend here and spending 30 mins looking at everything we found it had pulled one wire just a little out of the board and had to be pushed back in and all was good. So maybe a little different setup there would be good.
Service & Delivery
Ameriglide service is very good. They were very helpful and answered my questions. Since I ran into a few problems, I had talked to them a few times and each time it was a pleasant experience.

I bought this stairlift for my aging mother who is partially paralyzed on her left side. She has such trouble with stairs. It is fairly easy to install and if you are handy you can do this. Everything is pretty simple to do. The track (depending on length) and housing are very heavy so 2 people would be ideal. I would not pay the extra $575 to have a professional install. Find a friend or call a local handyman to assist you. The one thing I did not realize with this product is the measuring aspect of this. If you have a person like my mother who has hard time moving without assistance then you have to add about another 10 to 15 inches on your measurement for the length of track. The reason for this is because the unit will stop on top step and not above the step which, for me is needed. Of course I didn't know this and went with measurements as directed on diagram. Upon installing unit is when I found this problem, called AmeriGlide and they shipped out an additional 10 inch track and additional bus lines (there were extra charges)which is when I found out about using WD40 to help glide the bus line. Now it is complete and works great. Mom tried it out today and she loved it.
